Pilates Research: Combined Effects of Inspiratory Muscle Training with Pilates on Dyspnea, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, and Quality of Life in Asthma Patients

This randomized controlled trial examined whether adding Pilates exercises to Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) provides additional benefits for adults with asthma. Fifty-two participants completed six weeks of training and were assigned to either IMT + Pilates or IMT alone.

Key Findings

Based on outcome data in the study (Tables 3–4, p. 3):

  • Breathlessness (dyspnea): The combined group showed a significantly greater reduction in symptom scores (p = 0.009).

  • Cardiorespiratory fitness: The IMT + Pilates group walked farther on the Six-Minute Walk Test (401.9 ± 30.9 m vs. 336.1 ± 41.5 m; p < 0.05).

  • Quality of life: Improvements across Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire domains were stronger in the combined group.

Conclusion

Both groups improved, but adding Pilates to IMT produced more pronounced gains in breathlessness, functional capacity, and asthma-related quality of life. The authors suggest this combined approach may offer a more comprehensive option for asthma rehabilitation.
