What is ITTAP?
International Accreditation for Pilates Teacher Training Programs
The International Teacher Training Accreditation for Pilates (ITTAP) is the Pilates Method Alliance's accreditation program for Mat, Reformer, and Comprehensive Pilates teacher training programs.
ITTAP establishes internationally recognized minimum educational standards for Pilates teacher training programs. Rather than evaluating individual teachers or teaching styles, ITTAP evaluates the educational structure of a teacher training program, including its curriculum, instructional requirements, student assessments, Teacher Trainer qualifications, and supporting documentation.
Developed in collaboration with Pilates educators and industry professionals, ITTAP provides a consistent framework that supports greater transparency and consistency in Pilates education while respecting the diversity of teaching methods and lineages throughout the profession.
What Does ITTAP Evaluate?
Accreditation Based on Published Standards
ITTAP accreditation evaluates the teacher training program, not the individual teachers who complete it.
Programs are reviewed against published standards that establish the minimum educational requirements for Pilates teacher training. Depending on the accreditation category, these standards include curriculum design, instructional hours, supervised learning, competency assessments, Qualified Teacher Trainer qualifications, and program administration.
Programs are evaluated on areas including:
✓ Curriculum design and educational philosophy
✓ Lecture and classroom instruction
✓ Observation, self-practice, assisted teaching, and supervised teaching hours
✓ Written and practical competency examinations
✓ Teacher Trainer qualifications
✓ Functional anatomy, safety, teaching methodology, ethics, and business education
✓ Student documentation and program records
What ITTAP Accreditation Means
Recognition That Your Program Meets the Published Standards
Programs that successfully complete the ITTAP accreditation process are recognized as meeting the internationally published minimum standards established for their teacher training category.
ITTAP accreditation demonstrates that a program has met the required educational, structural, and assessment criteria outlined within the applicable standards. It provides prospective students, graduates, and the Pilates community with confidence that the program has been independently reviewed against an internationally recognized framework.
Benefits of ITTAP Accreditation
Programs that achieve ITTAP accreditation receive more than recognition for meeting the published standards. Accreditation also provides opportunities to increase visibility and demonstrate a commitment to transparent, structured Pilates education. Benefits include:
Program listing on the PMA Website
Accredited programs are listed on the PMA's website, making it easier for prospective students around the world to discover and compare ITTAP-accredited teacher training programs.
Recognition by the Pilates Method Alliance
Programs that successfully complete the ITTAP accreditation process are recognized as meeting the published ITTAP standards for their accreditation category.
Support of an International Standard
ITTAP provides a consistent framework for evaluating Pilates teacher training programs across Mat, Reformer, and Comprehensive education while respecting the diversity of teaching approaches throughout the profession.
What ITTAP Does NOT Do:
Understanding the Scope of Accreditation
ITTAP accreditation applies only to the teacher training program.
ITTAP does not:
Certify individual Pilates teachers
Rank programs from best to worst
Endorse one Pilates methodology over another
Evaluate individual instructors or graduates
Determine teaching style or educational philosophy
Programs may teach different Pilates approaches while still meeting the published ITTAP standards.

Hear from an ITTAP-Approved Program
"The ITTAP application process was very straightforward and user-friendly. We did have some questions as we completed the application, and Dan at PMA answered all of them in a very thoughtful and timely manner. ITTAP places the curriculum and practice teaching at the forefront, which will create better teacher training courses and stronger Pilates teachers. Applying for the new ITTAP program was a good exercise for our studio, we had to revisit our educational model and rethink and adapt parts of our training. We feel our programs will be even better this year because of the new ITTAP standards.”
