The PMA's Pilates Youth Program (PYP) Committee is in the process of a 3 part project that includes the following.
Creating a manual that will delineate Pilates mat programs appropriate for grades K - 3rd 4th – 7th (ages 9 - 12); and 8th – 12th (ages 13 - 17).This can be used for school, studio, or youth center programs.
Providing a research packet.
Developing a formal curriculum for school programming.
As the physiology of children changes dramatically with each year of growth and development, the manual will delineate Pilates programs for specific age groups appropriate to their specific physical and learning capacities and needs. The manual will also offer modifications for safe execution at any level.
The manual will provide a history of the Pilates method and its founder, Joseph H. Pilates. It will include anatomical references and safety guidelines. Appendices will provide additional reference material along with lesson plans and trouble-shooting.
The PMA is developing this exciting program to assist teachers in delivering Pilates programs to young people in a safe and effective manner. Much can be gained by our children learning an exercise method that can enhance their physical, mental and spiritual health, confidence, self-esteem, sporting competency, ability to self-regulate, ability to manage stress, mental clarity and control.
Our dream is to inspire the youth of today to be the Pilates practitioners of tomorrow and by doing so, to build a healthier, happier world.
