Continuing Education PMA certification is valid for 2 years. The PMA requires all PMA Certified Pilates Teachers to earn 16 PMA approved CECs (1 hour = 1 CEC) in order to renew certification at the end of their two year term. CASTLE Worldwide, Inc. emails PMA®-CPTs certification renewal reminder notices 6 months, 3 months and 1 month prior to expiration. It is imperative that CASTLE have correct email addresses for this purpose. CASTLE will also mail a copy to the home address on file 6 months prior to expiration.
Rationale: The purpose of this requirement is twofold.
First and foremost, the purpose of continuing education is for the protection of the public. Continuing education that advances knowledge, skills, and abilities, supports the Pilates professional in providing safe and effective instruction. Both the two-year term for PMA certification and the average of hours per year of continuing education are in line with other NCCA Accredited certification programs in fitness and allied healthcare.
PMA Approval of Continuing Education The PMA approves continuing education coursework throughout the year. PMA approval of a given workshop begins on the 1st of each year and expires on December 31st of the same year. The PMA accepts coursework applications from:
Continuing education credits (CECs) are awarded based on the number of clock hours spent in direct participation in a structured educational format. Approved coursework is determined to be either Pilates content or 'Complementary content'. Pilates content coursework: Pilates content coursework must be taught by a PMA-CPT, who has been teaching clients for a minimum of five years and has been teaching Pilates workshops for teachers for a minimum of one year. Complementary content coursework: Allied Modalities Allied modality workshops support the certified Pilates teacher by broadening their skill set beyond the Pilates paradigm. Such coursework includes topics such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, and movement and must be taught by a licensed healthcare professional, or an individual with a degree–minimum of a Bachelor’s. Subject matter must fit within the presenter’s scope of experience/knowledge and be applied appropriately to the Pilates professional’s Scope of Practice. Industry Development Industry development workshops are intended to enhance the Pilates teacher’s understanding of the structures inherent within established professions. Presenters should identify established norms, and focus on those established elements that commonly define an industry. This coursework must be taught by individuals with field experience in third party certification, professional associations, accreditation, or licensure development. Subject matter must fit within the presenter’s scope of experience/knowledge and be applied appropriately to the Pilates professional’s Scope of Practice. Research The promotion of research within the field of Pilates represents a level of development and growth that is invaluable for Pilates teachers that want to remain at the cutting edge of scientific understanding and validation of the Pilates Method. Research studies undertaken at a university, college, research organization, or by an individual will be considered. Subject matter must fit within the presenter’s scope of experience/knowledge and be relevant to the Pilates professional’s Scope of Practice. The research methodology must provide minimally one of the following levels of evidence:
CEC Provider Appeals: If a CEC Provider application is denied, the applicant may appeal. An Appeals Form must be submitted to the PMA office for the attention of the Continuing Education Specialist, along with the administrative fee. The Certification Board Chair reviews all appeals. Appeals are processed within 30 days upon receipt of all required documentation. Once reviewed, the Chair will render a decision. All decisions are deemed final, each course may only be appealed once, and all fees are non-refundable. The applicant is notified of the decision via phone or email. If a denial is reversed, the provider’s approval will be considered in effect from the original date of receipt by the PMA. Certificant Appeals: Certificants who petition for PMA CECs and are denied may appeal. Candidates who wish to appeal may do so within 10 days of notice of a denied application. An Appeals Form must be submitted to the PMA office for the attention of the Continuing Education Specialist along with the administrative fee. The Certification Board Chair reviews all appeals. Appeals are processed within 30 days upon receipt of all required documentation. Once reviewed, the Chair will render a decision. All decisions are deemed final, each course may only be appealed once, and all fees are non-refundable. The certificant is notified of the decision via phone or email. If a denial is reversed, the certificant’s approval will be considered in effect from the original date of receipt by the PMA.
