NEW YORK - Connected Core
Saturday, January 20, 2018 9:00 AM - Sunday, January 28, 2018 5:00 PM
Finetune Pilates Studio 329 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11201

Date of Workshop: January 28, 2018
Presenter(s): Peggy Wallin-Hart, PMA-CPT
Workshop Time of day: 9am-5pm
Title of Workshop: Connected Core
Workshop Description: The core is our physical, emotional & energetic center. Its power is not found in isolation but rather in relationship to our whole being and it’s interaction with the world around us. Working from this premise, our core musculature needn’t be ‘held’ in stabilization but rather activated by the way we move. This natural support can be triggered through a chain of events starting with our hands & feet. Using familiar exercises from the Pilates repertoire, we will explore this natural whole body potential and connect the dots from the feet & the hands to our dynamic center… and back out again. Foot to Core How our feet address the ground influence & enliven our abdominal support. Beginning with foot exercises to awaken & bring awareness to the architecture of the foot, we will then follow this energy up through the pelvis to explore the “roots” of our legs deep in the torso. Hand to Core Whether addressing the floor in quadruped or the handles and bars of the apparatus, the hands have a direct line of communication via the shoulder girdle to our center. Enlivening this connection will forever change your experience of “arm” exercises & will reveal the vital role your upper body can play in your overall power. Connected Core Having explored the core’s natural ability to receive energy & information via the hands & feet we will now uncover it’s capacity to give energy, support, and strength back out to the body as a whole. This connected core is a hub of energy & information that responds to our environment & allows us to optimize our physicality in & out of the studio.

NEW YORK - 60+ WOMEN OVER 60
Saturday, January 20, 2018 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Pilates For Every Body 1674 Western Avenue Albany, New York. 12203

Date of Workshop: 1/20/18
Presenter(s): Penelope Shure
Workshop Time of day: 4:00-7:00pm
Title of Workshop: 60+ WOMEN OVER 60
Workshop Description: Aging women are faced with emotional and physical changes and challenges that can often make them feel stigmatized by values and ideologies in the modern Western society we live in. Looking youthful can be confused with looking your best as natural physical changes occur with aging. Feeling your best is paramount to looking your best! When women learn to value them-selves and accept life’s natural changes, dealing with societal stigmas and attitudes becomes less of a threatening and/or stressful experience. Through the practice of Pilates with the safety modifications that are necessary as our bodies go through age-related changes, we are able to maintain the strength and spirit we need and are looking for. Joseph Pilates said “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. IF it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.” This workshop addresses the modifications of daily living & Pilates necessary to age with grace, energy & vitality!

MASSACHUSETTS - Gentle Pilates
Saturday, February 10, 2018 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Studio Helix 150 Main Street 3rd Floor of Thorne's Market Northampton, MA, 01060

Date of Workshop: 2/10/18

Workshop Time of day: 1:00-4:00pm
Title of Workshop: Gentle Pilates
Workshop Description: A movement class that lays the foundation for SAFE exercise modifications and lifestyle adaptations, Gentle Pilates is the perfect complementary workout to all of your favorite ways to move your body. Deviations from the traditional classical order develop sequentially from least to most compression on the spine with modifications necessary for spinal pathologies and osteopenia/osteoporosis. Learning how to stretch properly and maintain pelvic alignment is critical in order to properly strengthen the body. Participants learn to find neutral pelvic placement and move, stretch & strengthen from that base of support. Core stabilization, along with a balanced flow from one exercise to the next allow everyone to develop an understanding of SAFE movement. Participants learn to feel and listen to their bodies, how their compensatory patterns affect their posture and how these patterns can be adjusted to improve alignment awareness and proprioceptive functioning. This class is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The Pilates principles of control, stabilization, breathing, concentration and finding your personal full range of motion are stressed and applied to each exercise with an emphasis of working from least to most compression on the spine to relieve pain and avoid fracture risks. The body-mind-spirit connection is discussed and explained and put into practice.

NEW YORK - Connected Core: Part 2: Hand to Core

River Pilates 876 Columbia Street Hudson, NY 12534

Date of Workshop: February 24, 2018
Presenter(s): Peggy Wallin-Hart, PMA-CPT
Workshop Time of day: 1:00pm-3:30pm
Title of Workshop: Connected Core: Part 2: Hand to Core
Workshop Description:  The core is our physical, emotional & energetic center. Its power is not found in isolation but rather in relationship to our whole being and it’s interaction with the world around us. Working from this premise, our core musculature needn’t be ‘held’ in stabilization but rather activated by the way we move. This natural support can be triggered through a chain of events starting with our hands & feet. Using familiar exercises from the Pilates repertoire, we will explore this natural whole body potential and connect the dots from the feet & the hands to our dynamic center… and back out again. This series of 3 workshops is open to all students, teachers & movers looking to investigate this vibrant core connection. PART 2: HAND TO CORE Whether addressing the floor in quadruped or the handles and bars of the apparatus, the hands have a direct line of communication via the shoulder girdle to our center. Enlivening this connection will forever change your experience of “arm” exercises & will reveal the vital role your upper body can play in your overall power. NEW YORK - Connected Core: Part 3: Connected Core
Saturday, March 24, 2018 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
River Pilates - 876 Columbia Street Hudson, NY 12534

Date of Workshop: March 24, 2018
Presenter(s): Peggy Wallin-Hart
Workshop Time of day: 1:00pm-3:30pm
Title of Workshop: Connected Core: Part 3: Connected Core
PART 3: CONNECTED CORE Having explored the core’s natural ability to receive energy & information via the hands & feet we will now uncover it’s capacity to give energy, support, and strength back out to the body as a whole. This connected core is a hub of energy & information that responds to our environment & allows us to optimize our physicality in & out of the studio. Part 1: Foot to Core presented on January 20 Part 2: Hand to Core presented on February 24

ReActive Movement (Body Harmonics Affiliate Studio), 6200 La Salle Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611

Date of Workshop: Saturday, March 3 - Sunday March 4, 2018
Presenter(s): Holly Wallis, PMA-CPT
Workshop Time of day: 12-6pm
Title of Workshop: BODY HARMONICS Post-Rehab Protocols: Hip & Knee - CALIFORNIA
Workshop Description: Starting with a review of the anatomy of the hip and knee plus all the muscles that wind around the pelvis, thigh and hip, we move on to examine which muscles are local and global and how to apply this information to movement. From there we consider subjective and objective evaluations of all the compartments of the lower limb. A major focus is two main functions of the lower limb: sit to stand and gait—how to assess these key functions and what to do to improve their execution. We also spend time on functional movement in general and common conditions of the lower limb—pelvis, hip and knee—as well as Sahrmann’s 11 movement impairments of the pelvis and hips. We conclude with a plan of action to restore optimal function and movement. Learning Objectives: - Gain a systematic and in-depth understanding of the lower limb - Learn both methodical and creative ways to approach movement impairments in the pelvis, hip and knee - Explore a variety of exercises that go beyond the Pilates repertoire, and push the envelope in terms of restoring optimal function and movement - Major emphasis is placed on hips and how they affect knees This workshop is appropriate for Pilates instructors, movement educators and therapists. CALIFORNIA - Teaching CORE to CORE…An Embodied Approach to Seeing, Sensing, Touching and Cueing Movement Awareness
Friday, April 6, 2018 - Sunday, April 8, 2018 - All Day
Sheppard Method Pilates 2180 Westwood blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025

Date of Workshop: Friday, April 6th, Sat/Sun, April 7th & 8th
Presenter(s): Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle
Workshop Time of day: Friday, 6-9PM, Sat/Sun 9AM-4:30PM
Title of Workshop: Teaching CORE to CORE…An Embodied Approach to Seeing, Sensing, Touching and Cueing Movement Awareness
Workshop Description: There is a primal way of being in our body, which we know intuitively, and which traditional cultures, animals and babies know as their true nature…being at home in your body, knowing how to relax, relate to others, restore and strengthen, and listen to your body’s guidance to self-heal. From this perspective, we discover that CORE, rather than a focus on the abdominals, is a dynamic expression of a relational way of being with gravity, ourselves, one another and our environment. This awareness opens us to whole body “core coordination”, rather than the static “core control”, which is like driving your car with the parking brake on! This updated perspective is a biointelligent, mindful way of being in the world where we awaken to a fluid, fascial movement patterning that opens new ways of seeing, sensing, touching and cueing movement awareness, and a profound way of re-shaping our physical, emotional and mental body. You discover how to make the movements your own. Along with the embodied Pilates repertoire and other movements we will explore together, Wendy will be teaching one private session on Saturday and one on Sunday, bringing these core concepts to life! “… I don’t remember a flowing lesson where I felt that we created that moment together! It was so powerful and unexpected. I felt strong and elastic doing the exercises with your support…The Tree never felt so good!” ….April, Pilates Practitioner

MASSACHUSETTS - WOMEN OVER 60

Date of Workshop: 4/7/18
Presenter(s): Penelope Shure
Workshop Time of day: 1:00-4:00pm
Title of Workshop: WOMEN OVER 60
Workshop Description: Aging women are faced with emotional and physical changes and challenges that can often make them feel stigmatized by values and ideologies in the modern Western society we live in.

Title of Workshop: Healing Diastasis Recti: How to Retain or Regain Fascial Tensioning
Workshop Description: Untold numbers of women, men and children have a disconnect of tissue synchronization at the Abdominal wall which at its most severe will include a Diastasis Rectus Abdominis. Even though the research in this area is small, we all know that a integrated Ab wall is essential for musculoskeletal, urogenital and pelvic organ support and health. The research does show more than half of adult women have lumbo pelvic floor and hip dysfunctions such as loss of bladder control, bowel pain, pubic symphysis pain and prolapse. Most of these dysfunctions include a Diastasis Rectus Abdominis, which is the tell tale sign of fascial loosening in the core cylinder. Put your foundational Pilates skills and biomechanics knowledge to work to learn simple and effective strategies to prevent and heal Diastasis and dysfunctions that go along with the unraveling of our connective tissue. The information in this workshop is based on the teachings and work of Diane Lee. Lee is the world’s expert on Pelvic Pain and DRA. Jennifer travels yearly to Vancouver to study with Diane and learn the latest in the scientific break throughs and the correct clinical applications for clients with DRA.

Presenter(s): Cara Reeser and Jeremy Laverdure
Workshop Time of day: TBA
Title of Workshop: Look, Listen, Push, Pull: Training Freedom and Support in the Head, Neck, and Shoulders
Workshop Description: Our neck functions to position our head for seeing, hearing, and communicating. Our shoulders are meant to allow our arms and hands to reach, grasp, and push in a large range. Easy enough, right? So why do our clients experience so much difficulty and discomfort in their necks and shoulders? Poor postural habits, learned physical attitudes, and our universal use of computers probably contribute. But, as Pilates teachers, are we helping our clients retrain bad patterns or just adding new ones? In this Movement Science Made Simple course we will: -Study the organization of the head, neck, and shoulder girdle in common Pilates exercises. -Examine the relationship between the arms, shoulder girdle and trunk in both open and closed kinematic chains. We know poor use of the neck and shoulders when we see it, but what are we really seeing? -Learn simple exercises and gentle hands-on techniques for mobilizing the neck and shoulders and re-patterning their movement.

Date of Workshop: Saturday, July 21 - Sunday, July 22, 2018
Presenter(s): Holly Wallis, PMA-CPT
Workshop Time of day: 12-6pm
Title of Workshop: BODY HARMONICS Neurophysiology 101 - CALIFORNIA
Workshop Description: Our nervous system is a vital underpinning to our daily movement and function and yet it remains the most elusive and least understood of the bodily systems. The nervous system is our information super highway that controls all the information that we take from our environment, and integrates it into meaningful functional movement. Through the manipulation of sensory input we can affect a change in the structural organization of the nervous system and thus how we move. In this way, the brain's structure becomes the information that it receives. This workshop is based on the latest research on the brain and how it can adapt and change its structure in response to information. You will gain a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, as well as the system pathways responsible for both perceiving our environment and moving within our environment. An appreciation of the neurological underpinnings of movement will help your cueing become more powerful in order to affect the responses you want in your clients. You will also learn how to design exercises that better access the nervous system to facilitate improved motor control and awareness. This workshop is appropriate for Pilates Instructors, movement educators and therapists. Presenter(s): Holly Wallis, PMA-CPT
Workshop Time of day: 12-6pm
Title of Workshop: BODY HARMONICS Core Integrity - CALIFORNIA
Workshop Description: We all know that a strong core is key to optimal function, balance and equilibrium. But how can we best facilitate effective core control and still create programs that appeal to average people who can't connect to subtle movements and deep inner muscles? In this workshop, we take a global approach to the concept of core and analyze both the inner and outer cylinders of support. These core systems help produce support and movement for the entire body as they criss-cross and spiral the torso. In-depth analysis is followed by observation and self-practice using specific exercises for each layer. You leave with a clear idea of how to help people connect to the different parts of their core. Learning Objectives: - Discover what the inner unit of support is and how it functions - Learn what the outer unit of support is and how it functions - Practise exercises for both inner and outer units for optimal core control - Explore ways to develop a sequence of exercises based on the core systems This workshop is appropriate for Pilates instructors, movement educators and therapists.

Workshop Time of day: 9am - 4:30pm
Title of Workshop: “A Body at Peace from A Body in Pieces”…A Paradigm Shift and New Vision in Bodywork and Movement Science
Workshop Description: Are you curious about and wanting to dive deeper into a conversation about living anatomy, fascia and movement? This ground-breaking workshop with clinical anatomist and movement educator, John Sharkey, will take you on a visually rich journey of our human embryology and self-emergence. You will experience the integration of science, theories, evidence and lots of “real time kinesthetic experiences” … creating a visual and sensory feast , so you leave with tactile knowledge of the true nature of our human architecture. We will compare and contrast a linear biomechanical approach, to this pioneering, biotensegrity “Helical body” approach of continuously tensioned contractile fascial fabric…”Anatomy for the 21st Century”! Your Paradigm Shifting Journey into Biotensegrity: 1. Three days of dynamic, thought provoking fascial movement and bodywork 2. John will use living anatomy images and video content from his highly acclaimed fascial dissection courses held in Dundee University in Scotland. 3. You will SEE first hand that there are no “joints” in the human body..and there is no stretching in tissues…only gliding 4. Discover how Embryology is evidence of our self-development, self-emergence, self-generated continuity of form from head to toe, back to front, birth to death 5. Become aware of how Classical Clinical Anatomy is the ideal platform to demonstrate the flaws of current embryological thinking and yet point us in the direction of a new paradigm that does not require us to throw the baby out with the bathwater …but does require us to retune our vision, our understanding and our appreciation of the connected oneness of all of us. 6. We need the new language and vocabulary of biotensegrity to truly understand and explain human motion, breath and chronic pain

UNITED KINGDOM - Look, Listen, Push, Pull: Training Freedom and Support in the Head, Neck, and Shoulders
Friday, September 28, 2018 - Sunday, September 30, 2018 - All Day
Pepilates (Wimbledon Studio) 126 Merton Road Wimbledon, London SW19 1EJ

Date of Workshop: September 28 - 30, 2018
This course begins on a Friday evening, followed by two 7-hour days on Saturday and Sunday (including a 1-hour lunch break). Actual times TBA. The Friday evening consists of a 2-hour mat class taught by Cara Reeser. (This is part of the workshop and is included in the workshop price for the participants.) Enrollment in a single day of the course is not permitted.

Enrollment in a single day of the course is not permitted.

Title of Workshop: Stand and Deliver: Understanding the Lower Extremity Kinetic Chain
Workshop Description: Humans are bipedal animals, with the various muscles and joints of the legs working together to produce controlled movement through space. In Pilates, we train in both gravity-eliminated and weight-bearing positions to optimize this upright functioning. By understanding how the hip, knee, ankle, and foot interact, we can more easily see where our clients’ movement is going wrong, and are more able to coach them safely and effectively. In this Movement Science Made Simple course, we will: -Study the anatomy of the lower extremity, with an emphasis on how the hip and the foot affect the knee -Learn Pilates protocols for promoting mobility and stability in the lower extremity -Examine common structural variations, such as genu valgum (“knock knees”) and genu varum (“bow legs”) and learn to adapt our Pilates protocols to accommodate or correct them, as appropriate Enrollment in a single day of the course is not permitted.
