Date of Workshop: October 4, 2014
Presenter(s): Benjamin Degenhardt
Title of Workshop: Upright Pilates

Beyond the obvious benefits of weight-bearing activities, emphasizing the standing plane is important because it is through this final and functional stage of the work that the benefits can seep into our students everyday life outside the studio. Get on your feet in this 5-hour workshop and learn the unique standing exercises as well as progressions of familiar repertoire to the upright position.

Don’t Stop! The Value of Transitions - CALIFORNIA
Saturday, October 4, 2014

Date of Workshop: October 4, 2014
Presenter(s): Rachel Taylor Segel
Title of Workshop: Don’t Stop! The Value of Transitions
Workshop Description: When Joe Pilates wrote about the valuable results inherent in his method, he described “the internal shower” with poetic power as the extremely important increasing of one’s circulation. He believed that the practitioner needed to build heat in the body in order to achieve the results that he knew Contrology could bestow – not only with his exercise movements but with the fluid continuity of the in-between transitions. This workshop will explain in detail the transitions between the Mat and Reformer exercises and their value in our workout results and our daily life.

Joe’s Extra Muscles: Accessing the Internal Shower Through the Equipment - CALIFORNIA
Saturday, October 4, 2014

Date of Workshop: October 4, 2014
Presenter(s): Rachel Taylor Segel
Title of Workshop: Joe’s Extra Muscles: Accessing the Internal Shower Through the Equipment
Workshop Description: Joseph Pilates said many times that “I designed my equipment to be extra muscles” both to aid him as the teacher and to aid the client in receiving something from the exercise that she could not get otherwise. In this workshop we will explore the purpose of the springs, straps, handles, etc. in their roles as “extra muscles.” What exactly is their job in each exercise and if we let them do their job what do we, the client, receive? As teachers how do we use these “extra muscles” to their full advantage so that our clients can achieve maximum results: elongated core connections, better breathing, more supple spine, uniform development? The ramifications of this truth are powerful yet simple and will transform your teaching!

Sunday, October 5, 2014

Date of Workshop: October 5, 2014
Presenter(s): Kelli Burkhalter Hutchins
Title of Workshop: Be One with the Spring: The Value of Moving With it, Not Against It
Workshop Description: The concept of ‘resistance’ in Pilates can be a complicated and confusing issue for many teachers and clients. In this workshop we will explore the difference of what moving ‘with’ the spring and not ‘against’ it looks like. We will discover how to teach our clients to “find the spring” and “move the spring through their bodies” – to truly connect with it. By deepening our understanding of the unique value of using the Pilates springs, straps, handles, etc. to their full advantage, we will better enable our clients to achieve maximum results: elongated core connections, better breathing, more supple spine, uniform development, and full body integration.

BodyReading - ARIZONA

Date of Workshop: October 11-12, 2014
Presenter(s): Peter Ehlers
Title of Workshop: BodyReading
Workshop Description: "Seeing is touch at a distance," said Ida Rolf. Learn to see and understand postural patterns in the body, using the Anatomy Trains updated version of her masterful visual assessment. Work smarter rather than harder, by identifying the strain patterns that underlie the pain patterns. The more you can see, the more efficient your work becomes. Develop more holistic strategies for resolving strain patterns and finding the structural ‘keys’ to create longer-lasting effective work. During this course we: • Develop and practice a simple but effective vocabulary for describing skeletal relationships – tilts, shifts, and rotations in the spine, shoulders, pelvis, and legs • Use the Anatomy Trains as a map for seeing the global as well as local soft-tissue patterns that create that skeletal geometry • Develop coherent single- or multi-session strategies based on what we see / feel There is ample time for small group and individual practice, so that you come out of this course with a dramatically improved ability to see, describe, strategize, and unwind postural holding patterns.

Date of Workshop: October 24-26, 2014
Presenter(s): Shari Berkowitz
Title of Workshop: Full Body Integration with Shari Berkowitz
Workshop Description: 3-Day Seminar on Biomechanics, Biotensegrity and Biodynamics of the human body as a functional whole with applications to Pilates. "Full Body Integration" must be the basis for all that we do. What is your perspective on the human body? How much does it align with how the human body really works? How do you tie it all together with a true education and apply it to your actual teaching of Pilates? How do you take your education and make it all make sense? In "Full Body Integration" you will learn the modern biomechanics: Biodynamics and Biotensegrity. Biodynamics is my theory of human physical movement and dysfunction. I am a biomechanics scientist and theorist in addition to being a Pilates teacher. I spend the majority of my time, in fact, developing ways for people to really understand how the body works at it's best and help people return to their most able states why dysfunction occurs. Pilates is an exceptional method to return a body to health...but only if we understand how the body works and make sure what we're doing in Pilates coordinates with that. We will explore and study: Biodynamics (by Shari Berkowitz) and Biotensegrity (by Dr. Stephen Levin) Functional Anatomy of The Human Body with specific detail on: The Spine The Pelvis The Shoulder Girdle The Legs and... we tie it all together...because we're not just bits and pieces...we are organisms Apply this knowledge and actions to Pilates Teaching...no matter what style you teach. Your perspective is everything. Please let me guide your education and understanding with "Full Body Integration".

Anatomy Trains in Training - WISCONSIN
Saturday, November 1, 2014 - Sunday, November 2, 2014

Date of Workshop: November 1-2, 2014
Presenter(s): Eli Thompson
Title of Workshop: Anatomy Trains in Training
Workshop Description: The Anatomy Trains map applies to assessment and person-specific application in all forms of personal training from Yoga to Pliometrics. The recent surge of research on fascia and its response to training is yielding specific 'take-aways' for the world of fitness, conditioning, and training. In this workshop, designed for personal trainers, dancers, Pilates and yoga instructors, we will review the fascia as a body-wide organ system that gets trained, repairs itself, and keeps us together, go over 'what's in' and 'what's out' suggested by current findings, including an overview of the Anatomy Trains Myofascial Meridians, Tom Myers’ revolutionary mapping of the fascial connections through the muscles. The limitations of the old mechanistic way of looking at body movement are becoming very evident. The ‘Anatomy Trains’ maps out the long fascial and myofascial kinetic chains that sequence and stabilize movement. The Anatomy Trains is a component in the body's 'tensegrity' engineering, which operates from a cellular to a macro body mechanics level. This course includes the latest research results relevant to today’s trainer in the construction, injury repair, force transmission, postural compensation, response to various forms of stretch, elasticity, fascial neurology, hydration and aging, as well as fascial pain - all of which are taking place within the extra-cellular matrix of fibers and mucopolysaccharide 'glue' See and feel the various layers and types of fascial tissue, understand all the fascial elements and their properties, how ‘sensori-motor-amnesia’ can rob us of our full potential, how rest is important to tissue health, and how all the fascial tissues ‘hang together’ to make total body movement. Come have a look at the new anatomy!

Date of Workshop: November 7-8, 2014
Presenter(s): Laura Browning Grant
Title of Workshop: Pilates & ADHD

Attention to the issues associated with ADHD has increased over the last decade.  Many suffers of the disorder are searching for ways to manage their symptoms.  Joseph Pilates observed that society was focusing solely on furthering the development of the mind and neglecting the development of the body.  Pilates understood that the well-being of an individual could only be achieved by engaging both the mind and the body.  When used as part of an ADHD treatment regimen, the Pilates method can improve an individual’s ability to focus, thus reducing ADHD symptoms and improving the quality of life for suffers of these disorders.

Laura Grant not only works with clients who have ADHD, but also lives with ADHD.  This course provides two perspectives—teaching and personal experience.  Pilates & ADHD workshop is designed to teach both instructors and ADHD sufferers how to use the Pilates Method as a tool in the treatment of symptoms.

Pilates & ADHD - NORTH CAROLINA
Saturday, April 25, 2015 - Sunday, April 26, 2015

Date of Workshop: April 25-26, 2015
Presenter(s): Laura Browning Grant
Title of Workshop: Pilates & ADHD
Workshop Description: This course offers both those who teach Pilates and those practicing Pilates an understanding of Adult ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and the positive benefits Pilates has on individuals suffering from symptoms of this disorder. During this program, participants will learn methods to use when teaching clients that will improve both focus and other ADHD symptoms. Ultimately, proper Pilates techniques learned in this training will offer clients an effective management tool in the treatment of ADHD. Why Study Pilates & ADHD Attention to the issues associated with ADHD has increased over the last decade. Many sufferers of the disorder are searching for ways to manage their symptoms. Joseph Pilates observed that society was focusing solely on furthering the development of the mind and neglecting the development of the body. Pilates understood that the well-being of an individual could only be achieved by engaging both the mind and the body. When used as part of an ADHD treatment regimen, the Pilates method can improve an individual’s ability to focus, thus reducing ADHD symptoms and improving the quality of life for sufferers of these disorders.
