It's not about being "good" at the exercises- MICHIGAN
Saturday, October 14, 2017 12:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Marquette, Michigan

Date of Workshop: October 14, 2017
Presenter(s): Debra Orlando
Workshop Time of day: 12:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Title of Workshop: It's not about being "good" at the exercises
Workshop Description: It’s not about being “good” at the exercises. Contrology is achieved in part utilizing the Pilates “exercises”. Often, as practitioners of contrology we tend to focus on getting good at the exercises; not the movement inherent in each exercise. Contrology is a method and the exercises are the form to find the method. In reality, it is not about “being good” at the exercises. It is about living the method through embodiment of your function. In this workshop the Contrology method will be discussed and how it is designed to bring us to “uniform development”. Natural function in our bodies will be scientifically discussed using The Franklin Method and how it is possible to move with natural function within the form of Pilates. Return to Life and Your Health will be discussed and how the teachings of Joseph Pilates support moving with natural function in our bodies. Once natural function is recognized in the body before us, teachers can better strategize their teaching. Participants will go through the full intermediate reformer sequence embodying the human function inherent in each exercise. Bringing our mind to the body will result in Contrology. Participants will leave this workshop with an understanding of human function and how it applies to the Pilates Method. Teachers will have a clearer understanding of what to look for when teaching the Pilates exercises and how to develop a strategy of leading their clients to a healthy movement pattern. The students will leave with a better understanding of what “return to life” means.

This workshop is for Pilates teachers who want to further their knowledge in the subject of spinal extension and acquire new teaching tools and fresh perspective on the classical Pilates material. Utilizing the concepts of thoracic extension, elongation and decompression, we will review how to teach swan on mat and all apparatus, without creating stress on lumbar and cervical spine. We will than analyze how to teach correct posture, flexion, rotation and lateral bending of the spine more effectively applying the same thought process that we use to teach proper extension of the spine. Taking the concept of thoracic extension a step further we will also explore how to safely teach several deep flexion exercises by providing proper support for the cervical spine, shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. During the workshop you will have an opportunity to participate in an exercises sequence that will solidify your new-found understanding of the importance of teaching proper spine extension and provide you with a new set of teaching skills to bring to your clients in private sessions and group classes.

Even though the research in this area is small, we all know that a integrated Ab wall is essential for musculoskeletal, urogenital and pelvic organ support and health. The research does show more than half of adult women have lumbo pelvic floor and hip dysfunctions such as loss of bladder control, bowel pain, pubic symphysis pain and prolapse. Most of these dysfunctions include a Diastasis Rectus Abdominis, which is the tell tale sign of fascial loosening in the core cylinder. Put your foundational Pilates skills and biomechanics knowledge to work to learn simple and effective strategies to prevent and heal Diastasis and dysfunctions that go along with the unraveling of our connective tissue. The information in this workshop is based on the teachings and work of Diane Lee. Lee is the world’s expert on Pelvic Pain and DRA. Jennifer travels yearly to Vancouver to study with Diane and learn the latest in the scientific break throughs and the correct clinical applications for clients with DRA.
