The Cadillac: Then and Now - OREGON
Sunday, March 15, 2015 - All Day

Date of Workshop: March 15, 2015
Presenter(s): Rachel Taylor Segel
Title of Workshop: The Cadillac: Then and Now
Workshop Description: This workshop interweaves 1940’s archival Pilates Cadillac exercises - many rarely seen - with the classical repertoire. You will learn how to perform and teach these “new” exercises as well as review and deepen your understanding of those more commonly taught. Through comparing and contrasting these two streams of Joseph Pilates’ work, you will gain new insights into how best to utilize the Cadillac in your sessions and how to layer exercises in the most effective way to meet your clients’ needs. The archival material will be especially helpful in deepening your ability to “read the body in front of you” - a critical skill for contemporary teachers. There will be plenty of time to learn the exercises in your own body, practice teach, observe other instructors at work, and ask questions. You will leave confident in your own skills and inspired by the genius of Joseph Pilates.

Pelvis Power - MARYLAND
Sunday, April 19, 2015 - All Day

Date of Workshop: April 19, 2015
Presenter(s): Rachel Taylor Segel
Title of Workshop: Pelvis Power
Workshop Description: Joseph Pilates said many times that “I designed my equipment to be extra muscles” both to aid him as the teacher and to aid the client in receiving something from the exercise that she could not get otherwise. In this workshop we will explore the purpose of the springs, straps, handles, etc. in their roles as “extra muscles.” What exactly is their job in each exercise and if we let them do their job what do we, the client, receive? As teachers how do we use these “extra muscles” to their full advantage so that our clients can achieve maximum results: elongated core connections, better breathing, more supple spine, uniform development? The ramifications of this truth are powerful yet simple and will transform your teaching!

Pilates & ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) - NORTH CAROLINA
Saturday, April 25, 2015 - Sunday, April 26, 2015

Date of Workshop: April 25-26, 2015
Presenter(s): Laura Browning Grant
Title of Workshop: Pilates & ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
Workshop Description: This course offers both those who teach Pilates and those practicing Pilates an understanding of Adult ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and the positive benefits Pilates has on individuals suffering from symptoms of this disorder. During this program, participants will learn methods to use when teaching clients that will improve both focus and other ADHD symptoms. Ultimately, proper Pilates techniques learned in this training will offer clients an effective management tool in the treatment of ADHD. Why Study Pilates & ADHD Attention to the issues associated with ADHD has increased over the last decade. Many sufferers of the disorder are searching for ways to manage their symptoms. Joseph Pilates observed that society was focusing solely on furthering the development of the mind and neglecting the development of the body. Pilates understood that the well-being of an individual could only be achieved by engaging both the mind and the body. When used as part of an ADHD treatment regimen, the Pilates method can improve an individual’s ability to focus, thus reducing ADHD symptoms and improving the quality of life for sufferers of these disorders. Laura Grant not only works with clients who have ADHD, but also lives with ADHD. This course provides two perspectives—teaching and personal experience. Pilates & ADHD workshop is designed to teach both instructors and ADHD sufferers how to use the Pilates Method as a tool in the treatment of symptoms.

Look, Listen, Push, Pull: Training Freedom and Support in the Head, Neck and Shoulders ("A Movement Science Made Simple" Workshop) - UTAH
Saturday, May 2, 2015 - Sunday, May 3, 2015

Date of Workshop: May 2nd and 3rd
Presenter(s): Cara Reeser
Title of Workshop: Look, Listen, Push, Pull: Training Freedom and Support in the Head, Neck and Shoulders ("A Movement Science Made Simple" Workshop)
Workshop Description: Look, Listen, Push, Pull: Training Freedom and Support in the Head, Neck and Shoulders ("A Movement Science Made Simple" Workshop) Our neck functions to position our head for seeing, hearing, and communicating. Our shoulders are meant to allow our arms and hands to reach, grasp, and push in a large range. Easy enough, right? So why do our clients experience so much difficulty and discomfort in their neck and shoulders? Poor postural habits, learned physical attitudes, and our universal use of computers probably contribute. But, as Pilates and Yoga teachers, are we helping our clients retrain bad patterns or just adding new ones? In this Movement Science Made Simple course we will: • Study the organization of the head, neck, and shoulder girdle in common Pilates exercises and Yoga asanas. • Examine the relationship between the arms, shoulder girdle and trunk in both open and closed kinematic chains. We know poor use of the neck and shoulders when we see it, but what are we really seeing? • Learn simple exercises and gentle hands-on techniques for mobilizing the neck and shoulders and re-patterning their movement.

Pilates and Neuro-Energetics - ILLINOIS
Saturday, May 2, 2015 - Sunday, May 3, 2015

Date of Workshop: May 2 & 3, 1pm-7:30pm
Presenter(s): Angela M. Carini
Title of Workshop: Pilates and Neuro-Energetics
Workshop Description: Dysfunction rarely occurs in isolation and is usually the result of chronic repetitive neuromuscular patterns that are dysfunctional over the long term. Instead of the traditional muscular strength and weakness model that is prevalent in modern physical therapy we will be adopting an Eastern approach to looking at structure with our aim being to create energetic flow and harmony in the body. We will be taking a dynamic 3 dimensional approach evaluating these patterns to see how shifting vibrational frequency along neuro-energetic lines can alter muscular function. We will observe energetic patterns in each others bodies and explore how cueing along energetic and myofascial lines yields better results than cueing individual muscle engagement. Chinese energy channels and western myofascial lines will be studied in order to achieve this. Learning Objectives: - To examine the similarities and differences of concepts of “core” from both an Eastern and Western perspective - To understand the importance of teaching relaxation and energetic fluidity in movement - To feel the difference between moving with muscular tension vs. moving with energy - Identify patterns of energetic disharmony and make Pilates exercise choices that create harmony in the body - To learn how to cue Pilates based exercises in a way that emphasizes kinetic chains/energetic flow vs. individual muscle engagement

Careful positioning of the body from an authentic source is combined with the exhilarating Pilates principle of dynamic fluidity of motion with perfect timing of muscles recruitment. Rhythm is explored through new breath patterns, percussive accents, sustained timing and physics. The Pilates practitioner continues to add to their modality a vocabulary derived from the pioneers of modern dance, ballet, anatomy-based cues, as well as movement theorist Rudolf Von Laban's spatial concepts and elements. Learn two new breathing techniques as the basis for accessing the movement phrases on the Pilates equipment and mat.
